Glossary

This glossary defines the words Tovari uses. Each means the same on a PC or Mac, in the phone-browser layout and in the mobile app; where the control differs, the entry says so.

Every transaction is in exactly one of four statuses.

The starting status for anything you enter yourself, including a scheduled payment you Enter: it has happened as far as you are concerned, but it has not settled at your bank yet.

You have checked the transaction against your bank and marked it settled. You can move a row back and forth between uncleared and cleared at any time.

Set by reconciling the account against a statement, never by hand. A reconciled row is locked: its status no longer changes when you click or tap it.

A transaction your connected bank has authorized but not yet posted, such as this morning’s card payment. Only a bank connection can make a row pending; when the bank posts it, the same row is updated rather than a second one added.

The small circle at the start of a transaction row, which shows its status and changes it. It is in the Status column on a PC or Mac and at the left of the row in the mobile app:

  • an empty outline is uncleared;
  • a circle with a tick is cleared (green on a PC or Mac, teal in the mobile app);
  • a circle with a padlock is reconciled (teal on a PC or Mac, green in the mobile app).

Click or tap it to move a row between uncleared and cleared. The phone-browser layout shows the same circle, and you can also swipe a row left for Clear, or Unclear on a cleared row; tapping or swiping a reconciled row explains the lock and changes nothing. See Reading your register for a labelled picture.

The balance after each row, worked out by Tovari. A posted or pending row shows the account’s running balance; an upcoming bill shows the balance projected after that payment, or — when it would not change it (a skipped payment, or one already waiting at your bank).

On a month heading in the register, Net is money in less money out for that month and Ends is the balance after its last row. While you search or filter, a posted month’s Ends is hidden, because only some of its rows show.

The line marking today in the register on a PC or Mac. Upcoming bills sit above it — overdue ones just above — and posted transactions below.

The rows under the Pending heading, between the Today line and your posted transactions. Its Ends is the account’s Working Balance.

A payment you expect — a bill, a paycheck or a one-time item — with a date and, if it repeats, how often. Tovari counts it in your forecasts and in Safe to Spend, but never adds a row for it by itself: each occurrence waits until you Enter or Skip it, or until Tovari recognises your connected bank’s own copy of the payment.

Records one occurrence in your register, filled in from the schedule, and moves the schedule on to the next one. When Tovari recognises the bank’s copy of that payment already in your register, Enter attaches to it instead of adding a second row. In the register on a PC or Mac it is the teal button labelled Enter, and when it records a new row the message that follows offers Undo.

Moves the schedule past one occurrence without writing anything to your register — “this one did not happen”. It does not cancel the schedule. In the register on a PC or Mac it is the button with a cross; the skipped payment stays listed, greyed out, with Restore to bring it back.

Notes that you have already paid one occurrence somewhere else — your bank’s bill pay, say — with the date and amount you paid. Nothing is posted to your register: the occurrence stays listed, reading Scheduled, while the payment reaches your bank. In the register on a PC or Mac it is the button with a calendar.

Money moved between two of your own accounts, recorded as a pair of linked rows — one in each account. A linked pair is left out of your spending and income because it is linked, not because of the category it carries.

How much you can spend right now without touching money already committed: the balances of the accounts you include, less the bills and scheduled items still to come in your planning window, plus income expected within it. Tovari works the figure out; the apps only display it.

A spending category you have chosen to manage with a monthly amount. Every transaction has a category, but only the categories you turn on are envelopes — Tovari never turns one on for you.

What an envelope did not spend in a month is added to what it has available the next month. Overspending does not roll over: the next month starts from its monthly amount, not from a debt.

The built-in category a transaction falls back to when it has no other — a new row nobody has filed yet, or one whose category was deleted. It cannot be deleted, so no transaction is ever left without a category.

Who a transaction was with — the shop, the utility, the employer. Payees are one shared list, so renaming one, or giving it a default category, applies everywhere it is used.

Your bank’s own wording for a transaction, often raw card-terminal text, kept beside the readable payee name. Show it under each row with View bank transaction information in the web register’s View panel, or Show bank text in the mobile app’s filter sheet.
