Comparison

Tovari vs YNAB

YNAB's the closest thing we have to a real rival. Here's where we differ, and where we don't.

We agree with YNAB about the things most budgeting apps skip. Both of us do envelope budgeting with real rollover. Both of us reconcile against your statement instead of asking you to trust the sync. And both of us treat money moved between your own accounts as one movement with two sides, not two unrelated transactions. If you've used YNAB and liked how it thinks, you'll be at home here.

Where we split is price, forecasting, and what happens to your data. We're $54.99 a year. YNAB is $109. We compute a safe-to-spend number and YNAB doesn't — that's a deliberate call on their side, not an oversight, because they think your category balances already answer the question. We spot recurring bills and project them forward, where YNAB waits for you to enter each scheduled transaction yourself. And our export hands you everything; YNAB's stops at 10,000 transactions, which a household a few years in will hit.

Where YNAB is the better choice

YNAB reads QIF files and we don't. If that's the only format your bank hands out, YNAB opens it and we'd make you convert it first. They've also got something we can't manufacture: twenty years of method, a huge community, and a library of teaching that has changed how a lot of people handle money. If that's what you're shopping for, YNAB is the real thing and it earns its price.
